In Kosmach, people talk about Oleksa Dovbush as if he walked out of the forest just last night. Every other old-timer knows "the" rock or "the" cave where the outlaw leader supposedly hid his looted gold before his own men betrayed him.
The cave tourists get shown
The most popular version leads to a rock formation an hour's walk from the village centre. The entrance is narrow, you'll have to duck, and inside there's just stone and darkness — no gold, of course. But local guide Vasyl swears the treasure is enchanted and only reveals itself to "an honest person".
What's actually true in this story
Historians confirm Dovbush really was active in these parts in the 1730s-40s, and the raids on noble estates did happen. The gold, most likely, remains a good story — it conveniently explains why someone in a poor mountain village has "almost found" the treasure for generations.
Still, the climb is worth it for the story alone — and for the view over the Kosmach valley, which you get for free, unlike Dovbush's gold.
